Now one of the great watering
holes in Maine, Mckays Public house opened in 2003 in a beautiful
turn-of-the-century boarding house. While most signage
generally follows the logo concept and design, once I began fabricating
McKays main sign, the graphic identity of the pub quickly began
to revolve around the sign itself.
In the tradition of the classic
English pub (or, public house), McKays sign hangs over
Main street, signaling thirsty travelers from a block away.
The
boar came at the suggestion of my dad (a fairly well-seasoned
British pub crawler in his own right) who pointed out the fact
that that the most typical pubs will often feature some sort
of beast as an emblem. I presented McKays owner Brian Smith
with the idea of doing a boar just because, well, just
because they are so frriggin CRAZY looking! He liked it, so I
positioned the head at a 3/4 angle to avoid looking looking
like the Boar's Head Meats logo (which is in profile). Since,
the boar has become a symbol of awesome food and great atmosphere
in Bar Harbor. |

The
sign and its various graphic elements ultimately translated into
a host of printed items, including cards, shirts, advertising,
website, and menu. |
